Happy Mother’s Day from Old Town Trolley Tours

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Here at Old Town Trolley Tours we have some special surprises for all of the Mom’s touring with us on Mother’s Day, May 9. But first, a little history…

The first Mother’s Day Proclamation was made by Julia Ward How in 1870. It most likely was a reaction horrendous losses suffered in the American Civil War and the Franco Prussian War in Europe and tied into her very strong pacifist beliefs. Many attempts were made to establish a Mother’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1908 that Anna Jarvis of West Virginia did so to honor one’s mother, which had been a dream of her own mother. After much lobbying to President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world at different times of the year, but 77 countries, including the US and Canada, celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May.

So in honor of Mother’s Day 2010, Old Town Trolley Tours of Washington, Boston and St. Augustine will be presenting mother who ride the tour with carnations. In Key West all moms will get a free ice cream cone from Mattheessens Ice Cream Parlor. In Savannah, moms will get a delicious ice cream cone from Leopold’s and in San Diego, from Cold Stone Creamery. So from all of us at Old Town Trolley Tours, Happy Mother’s Day!

Dr. Charles Drew - Washington native and founder of the modern blood bank system

Dr. Charles Drew - Washington native and founder of the modern blood bank system

Washington, DC native Charles Drew was born on June 3, 1904. An excellent student and athlete, Drew won a scholarship to Amherst College where he was captain of the track team and an All American. After graduation, Drew taught biology at Morgan State University and served as its athletic director. In 1928 Drew enrolled at McGill University to study medicine. He was drawn to medicine after his sister Elsie succumbed to influenza in 1920. He graduated in 1933 with two degrees, Master of Surgery and Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Drew did his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. While at Columbia that he began his research into blood and blood transfusions and wrote a dissertation called Banked Blood, which described his technique for long term blood plasma preservation. Drew had discovered that by separating the plasma (the liquid part of blood) from the whole blood (in which the red blood cells exist) and then refrigerating them separately, they could be combined up to a week later for a blood transfusion. With the outbreak of World War II, Dr. Drew’s research and discovery of the blood banking and typing saved countless lives and continues to do so today. On April 1, 1950 Charles Drew died in car accident, a great scientific life cut short.

Truman Little White House, the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum, the Key West Aquarium, the Old Jail and the St. Augustine History Museum will offer free admission to all veterans.  They can be active duty, retired or honorably discharged.

Veteran’s Day, also known as Armistice Day or Rembrance Day, is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.  Germany signed the document on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 formally ending the “War to End All Wars” as World War I was called.

Let us never forget that sacrifices that these men and women made, and continue to make for us today,  enable us to live in a free country. It is with great honor that Old Town Trolley Tours of Key West and its sister companies salute these brave men and women.

Greetings from Old Town Trolley Tours of Washington, DC. My name is Citgo and I am named after a gas station. It’s the name of the gas station Eric Holmes found me. Now I live at Old Town Trolley Tours of Washington, DC. And I must say, since I’ve moved here, everyone has been so nice to me. I’m not sure if it’s because they like me, or because I work for catnip. I have been here just a few days, but (more…)

Yummy bamboo.

Yummy bamboo.

Four years and some change ago, Tai Shan was born. That makes him the equivalent to be around the age of 13 in human years. I know what I was thinking about when I was 13. But a Giant Panda is a little different than humans. They are considered cubs until they reach the age of two and in the wild may stay with their mother until the age of three. At the age of four, they reach breeding maturity. That means, it’s time for Tai Shan to finally move out and get his own bachelor pad! (more…)

Daffy Duck, Donald Duck, Mallard Fillmore, Howard the Duck and Disco Duck are all famous ducks in American pop culture. Some are loved. People come from all over the world to Disney Theme Parks and get autograph of Donald and Daisy. Some are not so loved. Howard the Duck is considered one of the biggest busts in movie cinema history. Here in DC we have our own ducks. They are referred to as the DC Ducks. (more…)

A Dozen Hot Dogs Barking Back

All throughout DC, there are numerous places to eat. Fast food restaurants line the major streets, while full service restaurants are opened and closed on pretty much a daily basis. Open any official Washington, DC guidebook, you will find at least a listing of restaurants if not a review of places to eat all throughout the city. From B. Smith’s at Union Station to Potbelly’s on 11th Street, NW, food is rampant in the nation’s capital. And if you can name a restaurant, most likely, it has been reviewed. All except for one major exception—the hot dog cart.
