Mallory Square

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Did you know that even before Sunset Celebration Mallory Square has been the hub of activity in Key West for over 150 years? Mallory Square or Mallory Docks as it was known in the olden days was where all of the cargo and wrecking vessels unloaded. Located next to the docks were master wrecker Asa Tift’s warehouses where he kept the bounty of wrecks he salvaged along with his ice house that provided ice to the island’s residents.

Today of course, Tift’s warehouse and ice house are still with us. One is the Shell Warehouse and the other is next door and the former home of the Key West Chamber of Commerce. We think if Asa Tift were around today, Mallory Square would not seem so foreign to him! Except of course, his bust in the Key West Historical Memorial Sculpture Garden.
